SLIGHT CHANGE TO SOFT STARTS

Commencing in Term 2, our soft starts in the morning – including Foundation students (see below) will be a little different.

The music will commence at 8.55 am and will continue playing outside.

At 8.58 am the first bell will sound to indicate a two-minute warning.

The 9.00 am bell should see all students inside and ready to start the day.

The expectation will be that students put their bags away and will follow teacher's instruction of what they can do. Parents need to say goodbye and not enter the classroom.

We are also happy if children just want to put their bag away and continue to play outside until the first bell.

For Foundation soft starts, the students are to enter their classrooms from the external doors.

THE TEAM OF MATES

I received an email from a former parent which I found quite heartwarming:

Hi Bruce,
How are you ?
I just thought you’d like to know that these Reservoir west boys from 2022 formed a team in the last summer season (all mates from year 6) and won the grand final for basketball on Saturday! They worked very hard for it, and can’t wait to play again in the next season in a few weeks! They have just gone from strength to strength. Such good kids!
Only RWPS boys/friends were allowed in this team! ♥️
Perhaps you could come to a game sometime!
Hope you’re well!
Naomi

Teaching & Learning

DAILY WRITING
I am excited to share with you some wonderful news about recent activities in the classroom! Over the past weeks, I've had the pleasure of visiting classes from various year levels to engage in Daily Writing sessions.

During these visits, teachers were tasked with the challenge of experimenting with different techniques to increase engagement while ensuring that the core goals of Daily Writing remained a priority. These goals include expanding vocabulary, teaching sentence structures, and enhancing writing skills—all while making the process enjoyable for students.

I must say, I was truly blown away by the creativity and dedication of our teachers in implementing these techniques. From games, procedural vocabulary when making pizza, learning about puns, links to literature and the inclusion of student photos and names in sentences, each classroom showcased unique approaches to make Daily Writing relevant, enjoyable, and challenging for our students.

To further celebrate this achievement, an after-school meeting was held on Monday, where teachers had the opportunity to share their learning and implementation explorations with their colleagues. It was a fantastic celebration of learning and collaboration, highlighting the commitment of our educators to providing the best possible learning experiences for our students.

TERM 1 EFFORT AND BEHAVIOUR PROGRESS REPORTS EXPLAINED
On Thursday, Term 1 Effort and Behaviour Progress Reports will be released on Compass. The report will display Effort and Behaviour on a grid and graphs for subjects taught during Term 1.

Teachers will use school-created matrices to make judgements about each student’s level of behaviour and effort in each subject area taught for the term. These matrices will be sent as a Newsfeed on Thursday with instructions of how to access these reports.

Teachers will decide if a child’s effort and behaviour is:
10        Excellent
8          Very Good
6          Good
4          Satisfactory
2          Unsatisfactory
0          Not Applicable

Scores 1,3,5,7 and 9 do not have a category. This is due to limitations with setting up reports using Compass.

Please note:

  • Foundation students will not be receiving a Term 1 Effort and Behaviour Progress Report.
  • Progress reports do not indicate levels of academic achievement.
  • School Yard Behaviour is only scored for behaviour and will appear as NA - 0 (Not Applicable) for Effort

Please keep an eye out for related Newsfeeds on Thursday.

JOHN FLEMING TERM 2 VISIT
MONDAY, APRIL 29TH

PARENT/CARER ENGAGEMENT SESSION
On Monday, April 29th our school will have the pleasure of hosting John Fleming, our educational consultant, for his second visit this year. John will be presenting a parent/carer information evening where he will provide some background information about himself, his work, details relating to all the components of the John Fleming Effective Teaching Model that our school utilises and also how he feels our school is tracking compared to the large number of schools he has worked with in the past and currently. Save the date and more information will come.

Wellbeing

WRAP UP OF TERM 1

Term 1 has been incredibly eventful and enriching in the wellbeing space! From the commencement of our Year 6 Peer Mediators and Wellbeing Leaders, who are learning how to support students, to fostering a culture of inclusivity through initiatives like Neurodiversity and Harmony Week, it's clear that our school community is dedicated to nurturing the holistic development of its students. Moreover, commemorating significant events such as International Women's Day and the National Apology to the Stolen Generation highlights a commitment to fostering empathy, understanding, and respect for diverse experiences and histories.

It's heartening to hear that there has been progress in addressing concerning behaviors and promoting respect within the RWPS community. By communicating clearly with parents and reinforcing the school's values of respect and responsibility, you've created a collective effort to foster a positive and supportive environment for everyone. It's through collaboration between educators, parents, and students that meaningful change can occur. Celebrating the progress made so far is important, and continued efforts to reinforce positive behaviors will contribute to a thriving school community.

We are commencing a fantastic initiative for the rest of 2024 and beyond! Focusing on increasing resilience, respect, and peer connectedness is crucial for fostering a positive and supportive school environment. Here are some steps that the Wellbeing Curriculum team and Year 6 Wellbeing Leaders will consider as they embark on this endeavor:

Data Review: Analyse existing school data related to student wellbeing, behavior, and academic performance to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. This could include reviewing survey results, disciplinary records, attendance data, and academic achievement data.

Student Input: Involve students in the process by gathering their feedback and insights through surveys, focus groups, or student-led discussions. This will help ensure that the strategies and interventions developed are relevant and responsive to their needs and experiences.

Needs Assessment: Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to determine what specific supports and resources students need to build resilience, foster respect, and strengthen peer connectedness. This could involve exploring factors such as social-emotional skills, relationships with peers and adults, school climate and culture, and access to supportive services.

Curriculum Review: Review the existing wellbeing curriculum to identify opportunities for incorporating lessons and activities that promote resilience, respect, and peer connectedness.

Intervention Planning: Develop targeted interventions and initiatives based on the findings of the data review and needs assessment. These could include peer mentoring programs, social-emotional learning activities, restorative practices, community-building initiatives, and supportive services for students who may be struggling.

Implementation and Evaluation: Implement the interventions and initiatives, monitoring progress and collecting feedback along the way. Evaluate the impact of the interventions on student outcomes, making adjustments as needed to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.

By taking a proactive and data-informed approach, the Wellbeing Curriculum team and Year 6 Wellbeing Leaders can work collaboratively to create a school environment where all students feel supported, respected, and connected to their peers and school community.

As the term comes to a close, it's evident that your efforts have created a supportive and inclusive environment where students and staff can feel success. Thank you for your dedication and continued support in promoting wellbeing and fostering a positive school culture.

Please enjoy the photos of students having fun and making connections in the Wellbeing Hub and the classrooms.

Have a safe and happy holiday – see you next term.
